Mindfullness and Wellbeing

Global has long been committed to developing socio-emotional skills in partnership with more traditional academic ones. Our work as a Responsive Cultural School is an enduring signal of this commitment. Yet, as demands on time and attention seem to grow each year, so must our concerted efforts to respond to them in school. And so we do!
Mindful Global
As part of this growing commitment to wellness, adults in our community have been learning about how to bring mindfulness practices into our learning space. Mindfulness helps students and adults change impulsive reactions to stimulus to thoughtful, responsive ones. It develops awareness of self. We have partnered with non-profit organizations that offer professional training, in-class instruction, and other resources to support mindfulness in education. Last session, Global Convent educators participated in numerous such exercises to learn mindfulness.
With a serene school campus, we realize our vision of pairing our school campus and our myriad of school programs in ways that allow us to understand and cherish the place we live. We believe understanding our role as caretakers and stewards of the earth’s resources is paramount to being an educated and healthy citizen.
New and long-standing initiatives engage our students in understanding this role:
Healthy Eating is Healthy Living: The school participates in a host of sponsored events and regularly incorporates nutrition discussions into our curriculum. We have a nutritionist on hand to help students investigate the nutritional value of what's on their plate - whether brought from home or cooked as part of school exercises. Our team invites students to participate in cooking clubs and activities like Watermelon Weight Challenge and other tastings that promote their awareness of what is growing in our garden
Beekeeping: Students visit government maintained institutions to learn about beekeeping as part of responsive citizens. Learning such activities cultivates in our students a sense of respect for the rural community and societal practices as a whole
Wellness Committee: Members (who include the Principal, Primary teachers, Wellness teacher, nutritionist, student interns, and two science teachers) meet monthly to coordinate activities on our campus
Dedicated Science Teaching and Learning: Two science specialists support hands-on instruction PreK-5 with life cycle and environmental learning segments included.
